As we get older we seem to start saying no alot more. So while we are no longer having to say no to kids, or to friends because of work or family issues, we still do it. We are now saying no to thinkings we want.
Why is that?
We all want things in life and most of the time we’re the thing standing in our way. If you say no to everything you want in life, especially when you now have time to enjoy it you won’t get anywhere. The more you stand in your own way the less likely you are to succeed.
In this article, we’re going to point out a few of the areas in your life where you might be saying no to the things you want, where you could be saying yes.
Did you know that many older adults are working longer these days, some are even returning to work. It isn’t always just for the money. For some who retired early, they found that they simply had too much time on their hands. We all remember the phrase “too much of a good thing can be a bad thing”.
So where is the NO?
Well, one thing older adults don’t recognize is their ability. Therefore when asked to do something they haven’t done in a while or possible never they say no to the possibility. In truth, it has nothing to do with actually doing the job, but in reality, it’s just themselves. In doing so you’re the one keeping yourself from going that extra mile, taking on more responsibilities, and enjoying a new experience. Learn to expect the unknown and to lean into it.
Everyone wants that great relationship, but too many older adults won’t put themselves out there to get it. You have to make the effort, go out, and actually meet people. Go on dates and take calculated (be safe) risks with new people. This is the only way that you can stop saying no to what you want in this area of your life.
Broadening your horizons
If you want to learn a new skill, stop standing in your way. We are in an era that provides us with the tools to constantly be learning. If you not learning new things you will be missing out on the new and wonderful ways to enjoy life. Our parents and grandparents didn’t have the options we do. So go out and find the information, learn how to do it, and practice it. Stop saying no to what you want out of life, push forward and actually do it. That’s the only way you’ll be where you want to be in your life.
Far too many people favor excuses when it comes to traveling how they want. And yes the current pandemic gives us the perfect one. However, it does not mean we have to stop entirely. But so many of us will use it to stay holed up in the safety of those familiar four walls. That is not really what is needed. Being safe doesn’t mean shutting yourself in.
Other people will also say they’d love to do this and that but have no money or no time. Some older adults, especially those who have lost their partner fear traveling alone. The key here on both points is you have to take the time to research the options.
The travel industry has changed and now makes travel for singles easier. If the cost seems to prohibitive, there are many low-cost options available. Today it just requires a little more research. Stop making excuses and take a proactive approach to get what you want in life.
Most seniors would like to live in their own home as they age, but to be blunt that can’t happen if you say no to needed changes. Sadly the older people get the less they are willing to take the necessary risks to allow us to age in place.. Instead of saying yes to make the required modification to lifestyle and environment they simply say no to the challenges change requires. They say no to what they want in life and grow complacent.
Here is a short book that was written to help older adults stay in their own home for as long as their health allows.

No is a complete sentence and doesn't leave much room for discussion
If you want to stop saying no to all the things you want in life and start saying yes, you have to consciously make the effort. Analyze your life; what is it that you’re doing that could be keeping you from your goals? What opportunities have you passed up that could have led you down the right path?
Next, you have to consciously make the effort to fix your behavior. This step is far easier explained than done and many give up because of that. You have to focus on your behaviors and weigh every opportunity. You have to take risks and put yourself out there. Stop excepting the way life is and start pushing yourself further to better things.

Start making a conscious choice and deliberate effort today. It won’t be easy, but the effort is well worth it in the end. You are the only thing standing in your way and you’re the only one who can do anything about it.
